Guide to carpet styles

Carpeting brings warmth, elegance, and countless functional benefits to your home, but you must choose the right one for your needs. Understand your needs and style, and you'll be
guaranteed to find a high-quality soft surface floor covering at a reasonable price.

Three basic styles?

The three are loop, cut-pile, and cut and loop. Then they go on further to be left intact as a looped construction, sheared in various heights, twisted or left loose.

A carpet's anatomy

They start as loop construction, where the yarns are attached to the backing, much like in a needlepoint. However, they can remain as-is: for example, the level loop has even, uncut loop piles, giving it an underfoot less-than-soft feeling. Berbers are also looped, but the yarns are thicker, and the pattern has a neutral color with distinctive brown and gray flecks.

Alternatively, the loops can be cut into various heights. These styles can be found in our carpet
store:

  1. Primary cut pile: With short, even fiber lengths with exposed ends, this has a somewhat fuzzy look and is suitable anywhere.
  2. High pile: This includes the shag, with long, loose fibers, and it's best for low traffic rooms, like the bedroom. It can also have a durable frieze, with shorter yarns twisted so tightly they curl, giving it a more casual look ideal for family rooms.
  3. Saxony: This is a cut-pile with slightly longer yarns. Saxony Plush has densely packed fibers giving it a soft, velvety, and formal look. Saxony Trackless, where the fibers are kinked at different angles, is a little more casual. Plush shows footsteps while Trackless does not.
  4. Low pile rugs: These have short, tightly woven fibers, are easy to clean, and are somewhat more durable. These are great for heavily trafficked rooms.
  5. Cut and loop. Piles of various heights create patterns, such as pin-dot, sculpted marbleized, and geometrics. These rugs are suitable for any room.
